About the jewi refugee garden

“The main objective of this project is to alleviate the suffering of the refugees who come from South Sudan and improve the diet of the children and elderly people in the refugee camps and enable them to develop their skills.”

The Jewi Garden is one of the oldest refugee garden projects that was established by the groups of widows who lost their husbands and often also their children and other family members during the civil war in South Sudan. Jewi refugee camp, where the garden is located, has a population of 50,000 South Sudanese refugees and is located about eighteen kilometers from the city of Gambella in Ethiopia. The garden has been sponsored by Covenant World Relief in the USA since its inception in 2015.

The garden was started because of the initiative of a group of widows who aspired to be able to better support their families through agriculture. The ECCSSE leadership helped them to establish a small garden which would enable widows to acquire farming skills and support their households through the food they obtain from the garden.

The Jewi Garden project is currently supporting more than 140 widows and 51 children with the crops it produces. This project has enabled widows to be trained in agriculture skills, field cultivation, land and seedbed preparation, disease and pest control, and agriculture business practices.

The ECCSSE Relief Department is now supervising three Widows Gardens; one in the Jewi refugee camp and two in the Juba and Bor IDP camps in South Sudan. All three Widows Garden projects combined are supporting more than 500 widows and their families. The beneficiaries of the garden thank Covenant World Relief, Paire Hills Covenant Church in South Dakota, and Community Covenant Church in California for supporting this essential project which transforms lives.
